I think you should start out with shorter videos jam packed with content just to retain any new audience's attention, then gradually you can make them longer once people have a general idea of what you're about.

They're very important, and you need to make them stand out. Be consistent with them too, a lot of the times I can tell who the creator of a video is just by looking at the thumbnail (even if their name/logo isn't in it) because their thumbnails have a theme (like font)
